CAMPUS
INFORMATION
Bilkent is located about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from Ankara city center and is connected
to downtown Ankara by an hourly free bus service. Bilkent occupies more than 500 hectares
(1,200 acres) of land. There are 3 campus sites, Main, Middle and East Campus, which are
connected by a regular free shuttle bus service.
Housing
Accommodation is available on campus for many graduate students either in single occupancy
dormitories or in shared apartments. All housing facilities are furnished and equipped
with basic necessities such as major appliances, kitchenware and bedding. Free high speed internet connection is available in all rooms.
Health Services
Free
emergency health services are provided for all students. There are two health centers on
the campuses with physicians and nurses available 24 hours a day, including weekends. In
addition to the full-time staff, specialists such as a dentist, optician, gynecologist and
psychologist are available for consultation. Subscription to group health insurance plans
are available for graduate students at reasonable rates.
Food Facilities
There are a number of restaurants, cafeterias and coffee
shops at the University serving a variety of food all day. These
places do not serve only healthy food choices but also act
as a social environment for the students. Ankuva Shopping
Center located outside the campus increases the food variety
with its restaurants.
A la Carte - Faculty of Engineering Building. Choice of hot
meals, Turkish cuisine.
Table d'hote Restaurant - Across from the Faculty of
Engineering Building. Set menu but inexpensive.
Coffee Break - Located along the pedestrian walkway on the
left side of the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social
Sciences Building, and near the School of Applied Technology
and Management. Good for a quick bite, pastry and coffee.
Express - Located near the Faculty of Art, Design and
Architecture Building. Sandwiches, choice of hot meals.
Food Center - Located near the gymnasium and Bookstore.
Sandwiches, pizzas, hamburgers, and a variety of kebabs are
available.
Kıraç - Located near the gymnasium and bookstore. Turkish
cuisine at reasonable prices.
Mozart Cafes - Located in the Faculty of Music and Performing
Arts and in the B Building. Pleasant decor and good food.
Sozeri Pide Hut - Located near the dormitories serves Turkish
pide and variety of kebabs.
Cafe In - Located near the Table d'hote Restaurant. A good
choice for delicious sandwiches, fast food and pastry.
Cafe M - Located in Dorms 69 and 70. Offers various food
and beverage alternatives in a comfortable place.
Bilintur Catering Centre - Located near the School of English
Language. Good for set menu, hot meals, and fast food.
Bookstore
The University bookstore offers a complete selection of
textbooks, stationery, greeting cards, CDs and cassettes as
well as national and international newspapers.
Banking and Shopping Facilities
One full-service bank on main campus is open during working
hours including lunch time. There are also a number of
automated teller machines across the campuses. There is a
well-stocked supermarket open seven days a week on Main
Campus. It is stocked with local and imported products.
Sports Facilities / Programs
The sports programs, activities and facilities of the university
are expanding constantly to keep pace with the growing
needs of the large student body. The facilities include three
gymnasiums, three outdoor tennis courts, one indoor tennis
court, several outdoor volleyball and basketball courts, two
mini-football fields, several aerobic/step studios,
fitness/conditioning room, several multi-purpose rooms, a
regulation size grass football field on Main Campus and a
60m x 40m multi-purpose grass football field on East Campus.
In addition, there is a seven thousand square meter multi-
purpose sports complex on Main Campus (with a large state
of the art fitness center, basketball, volleyball and team
handball courts, three squash courts, aerobic/step and program
studios and an indoor running-walking track).
Students can participate in the following sports courses:
tennis, table tennis, squash, badminton, basketball, volleyball,
aerobic/step, fitness/conditioning, fencing, fit boxing,
taekwondo, yoga, kung fu (wing chun, capoeira, aikido, Turkish
folk dancing, ballroom dancing and ice skating.
Furthermore, students who enjoy competition may play on
University teams in the following sports: American football,
basketball, volleyball, football, and tennis.
International Center
The International Center (IC) serves as an advising and organizing unit for all international faculty members at Bilkent, addressing the special needs of faculty members throughout their stay by preparing the new international faculty orientation program, information booklets, organizing social events and trips and providing ongoing assistance and guidance.
Schools and Kindergartens
Innovative pre-school, primary and secondary education
programs are available to serve the needs of the University
community. Bilkent Preparatory School (BUPS) and Bilkent
International School (BIS) are English-medium high schools
providing IGCSE and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs.
The Bilkent Private Lycee is a bilingual school that follows
the Turkish Ministry of Education curricula, and its primary
school provides education in Turkish with some English
language classes. There are two pre-schools in campus,
providing English and Turkish medium education respectively.
Social and Cultural Activities
Bilkent University is a leader in music and performing arts
in Turkey. Bilkent Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is Turkey's
first and only academic philharmonic orchestra. It performs
regularly at the University Concert Hall and gives concerts
in other parts of Turkey and abroad. Young actors studying
at the Performing Arts Department have regularly scheduled
performances. Student clubs organize movie showings,
concerts, and seminars. The University also sponsors frequent
lectures, art exhibitions, and literary evenings.
