Graduate Study at Bilkent University
INTRODUCTION

Bilkent University is a non-profit research university in Ankara, Turkey. The language of instruction is English.

The University has 12,000 students and its teaching staff numbers around 1000. Bilkent attracts students of the highest caliber nationally and from abroad. Every year a large proportion of the top 100 scorers in the Turkish National University Entrance Examination choose to study at Bilkent. International students come from countries such as Australia, Bulgaria, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Jordan, Tunisia, UK, USA, Russian Federation and Ukraine.

The faculty is composed of a motivated and dynamic academic staff from over 40 different countries. In terms of publications per faculty, Bilkent ranks first in Turkey, and high internationally.

Bilkent University hires academic and administrative staff and admits students regardless of gender, race, color, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to staff and students at the university.

A high proportion of Bilkent graduate students receive some form of financial support from the university. Graduate students who have completed their studies at Bilkent go on to find excellent jobs in Turkey and around the world, at prominent universities, research institutes and international organizations.

Bilkent University maintains strong links with universities in the US and Europe through joint seminars, student and faculty exchanges, academic programs and research projects. The university has a communications office in New York City, equipped with interactive video conferencing capabilities. A number of courses are delivered through this office via satellite connection.

Application for Admission

Bilkent University graduate programs offer admission to applicants who have the necessary qualifications and show promise of scholarly achievement.

Each department establishes its own criteria for admission and departmental listings include more detailed information about these. The following are some of the common admission requirements for all departments:

  • All applicants are required to submit ALES (Akademik Personel ve Lisansüstü Eğitimi Giriş Sınavı - Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam) or GRE scores. (GMAT score is required for graduate programs in Business Administration.)

  • Fluency in written and oral English. TOEFL (Test of English for Foreign Language) scores are required for non-native English speakers.

  • Official transcripts.

  • Recommendations from instructors or others qualified to evaluate academic ability.

Application forms can be obtained either from the Graduate Admissions Office or through the Internet.

Tuition

The annual tuition for students entering the graduate program in September 2008 is 13 000 US dollars for international students and 15 400 YTL (including value added tax) for Turkish students.

Financial Assistance

Currently about 80% of the graduate students receive financial support. Financial assistance is provided in the form of a tuition waiver or a tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend. The amount of the stipend is adjusted annually to cover changes in the cost of living.

Both admission and financial assistance are based on academic accomplishment and scholarly promise alone, without regard to gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age, national origin or physical disabilities.

Visa Requirements for International Applicants

All international students are required to obtain a student visa from the Turkish Consulate in their native country before departing for Turkey. At least 8 weeks should be allowed for the completion of the visa application. In addition, all international students will be required to obtain a residence permit after arriving in Turkey.
