Bilkent University is a non-profit research university in Ankara, Turkey. The language of instruction is English.

The University has 12,500 students and its teaching staff numbers around 1000. Bilkent attracts students of the highest caliber nationally and from abroad. Bilkent attracts many of Turkey's brightest high school graduates. International students come from countries such as Australia, Bulgaria, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Jordan, Tunisia, UK, USA, Russian Federation and Ukraine.

The faculty is composed of a motivated and dynamic academic staff from over 40 different countries. In terms of publications per faculty, Bilkent ranks first in Turkey, and high internationally.

Bilkent University hires academic and administrative staff and admits students regardless of gender, race, color, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to staff and students at the university.

A high proportion of Bilkent graduate students receive some form of financial support from the university. Graduate students who have completed their studies at Bilkent go on to find excellent jobs in Turkey and around the world, at prominent universities, research institutes and international organizations.

Bilkent University maintains strong links with universities in the US and Europe through joint seminars, student and faculty exchanges, academic programs and research projects. The university has a communications office in New York City, equipped with interactive video conferencing capabilities. A number of courses are delivered through this office via satellite connection.


Bilkent University graduate programs offer admission to applicants who have the necessary qualifications and show promise of scholarly achievement. Each department establishes its own criteria for admission and departmental listings include more detailed information about these. The following are some of the common admission requirements for all departments:

  • All applicants are required to submit ALES (Akademik Personel ve Lisansüstü Eğitimi Giriş Sınavı - Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam) or GRE scores. (GMAT score is required for graduate programs in Business Administration.)

  • Fluency in written and oral English. Test scores are required for non-native English speakers (please see the Graduate School web sites for the list of accepted tests).

  • In addition, foreign language requirements as imposed by Inter-universities Board (ÜAK) of Turkey (minimum of 55 from YDS or its equivalents as listed by the Board, in a language other than the mother tongue) must be satisfied by Turkish citizen PhD applicants

Currently about 80% of the graduate students receive financial support. Financial assistance is provided in the form of a tuition waiver or a tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend. The amount of the stipend is adjusted annually to cover changes in the cost of living.

Both admission and financial assistance are based on academic accomplishment and scholarly promise alone, without regard to gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age, national origin or physical disabilities.


The students who are coming from a country, which is exempted from the visa requirement to enter Turkey, should not have to apply to the Turkish Consulates for any kind of visa. They may directly come to Turkey without obtaining a visa including student visa.

However, the student who are coming from a country, which is not exempted from the visa requirement to enter Turkey, should  have to apply for any kind of visa prior to coming to Bilkent, Turkey. The students should visit the Turkish Consulate in their country to apply for a visa as soon as they receive their admission confirmation from Bilkent University.

It is very important that each student should confirm  their country's visa regime with Turkey via the Turkish Consulate in their own country.
