MA TEFL Application and Admission Information

 

Admission to the Bilkent MA TEFL Program is competitive, and the program is demanding in its academic requirements. Applicants accepted to the program are expected to maintain their personal commitments to academic and professional advancement throughout the rigorous load of courses, assignments, research, and thesis compressed into eleven months.


Admission Requirements and Procedures

 

ALL applicants are required to submit the following by the deadline (9am on 27th April, 2012):

  • Applications should be completed online. Click here to go to the application form.

  • Two letters of recommendation- one from the applicant's rector, dean, or department head stating that the candidate has permission to attend the 11-month program with full salary support, and a second from a person familiar with the applicant's academic abilities.

  • Academic transcripts, which show the receipt of a Bachelor's degree (BA).

  • A personal statement describing the qualifications and experiences (personal and professional) that the applicant thinks prepare him/her to benefit from and contribute to the MA TEFL program.

Turkish applicants must also submit the following. (This test score may be submitted after the deadline.)

  • An ALES score (verbal) of 60 or above

International applicants must submit:

  • A GRE Score of 950 (verbal and quantitative total) and 3.5 analytical writing

All applicants who meet program requirements in the first stage of applicant screening are then invited to the Bilkent University campus, in Ankara, to complete the application process. This full day of testing and interviews is scheduled for 27 May 2012.

  • Completion of an English proficiency test
  • Completion of a written essay
  • Participation in an oral interview

Criteria for Acceptance

 

Candidates who are accepted to the MA TEFL program must meet at least the following criteria:

  • Be at the appropriate academic level for graduate study
  • Have a grade point average of 2.75/4.00 or 70%
  • Have had at least two years full - time teaching experience
  • Demonstrate proof of a Bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrate English language abilities that ensure success in an entirely English-medium study environment
  • Demonstrate qualifications and experiences (personal and professional) that prepare him/her to benefit from and contribute to the MA TEFL program
  • Be in a position to transfer the knowledge and experience gained in the MA TEFL program to future teaching experiences
  • Provide proof of either an ALES score (verbal) of 60 or above, or a GRE score of 950 (verbal and quantitative total) and 3.5 analytical writing.

Turkish candidates who are expecting their home institutions to support their year of study must

  • Be able to make appropriate arrangements with their home universities for leave. (It is the candidate's responsibility to be sure his or her university will grant a release with support for the yearlong program.)
