1. Full of hope for future, in peace with the past; Gizem Girişmen Turkish disabled female archer
Gizem Girişmen, born in 1981, had a terribble traffic accident in 1992 at age of eleven as a result she was parallized. This situation however, was not a handicap for her not to hang on to life. In 2004 she completed her education with honors in Buisness Administration from Bilkent University. That year fortunately, she got interested and soon decided to practice archery. Her dedication to archery, lead her to win first place in the 2007 Czech Republic International Archery Tournament and the second place in the 4 th European Disabled Archery Grand Prix in the United Kingdom.
This year she represented Turkey at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in the category of archery, and won the gold medal by defeating her Chinese competitor Fu Hongzhi.
Last week Gizem Girişmen and her mother kindly accepted the invitation of the Dean of Students, Perin Öztin for a lunch at Bilkent Hotel. The coordinator of the Dean of Students, Ayşın Gaye Gürbüz, Sena Özel in charge of the Social Responsibility Center, the coordinator of Alumni Center Ayşe Tuğcu, and the president of the Alumni Association (BİLMED) Sinan Öncel , had a chance to participate to this meeting.
We are all, as Bilkent University family, proud of this great achievement of Gizem Girişmen and our heart will be with her during the 2012 Paralympics in London.
