ABOUT ANKARA
Ankara lies in the heart of the Anatolian region and has been the crossroads of many civilizations dating back to the Bronze Age.
In 1923, Ankara became the capital of the Turkish Republic under its founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Today, modern Ankara is the second largest city in Turkey with over 5 million people. It has two main centers. Ulus and its adjacent citadel mark the original ancient and medieval town site, which has managed to retain its unique, historical atmosphere. Old houses and shops selling traditional crafts, a bustling nearby market, narrow winding streets and alleys, and the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations give Ulus and the citadel an inviting and traditional picturesque character. Atatürk Boulevard is Ankara's main thoroughfare and links Ulus with Kızılay, which make up the heart of the modern city, with its lively night life, cafes, clothing stores and modern flare. The road continues south to Çankaya, a district near the Presidential Palace, where most of the embassies can be found. Ankara is a well-planned city, with wide boulevards, plenty of parks, restaurants, cultural activities and museums. Several universities, in addition to Bilkent, give Ankara a large student and professional population. The city has much to offer in terms of concerts, operas, theatrical performances, and lectures as well as events organized by foreign missions. Its place in the center of Turkey makes it a convenient hub for travel by means of the country's excellent network of private long-distance bus companies.
The weather in Ankara is fairly typical for Central Anatolia. While spring and autumn are generally moderate, with temperatures ranging between 10º C (50º F) and 20º C (70º F), the winter and summer seasons can bring more extreme temperatures.
