BANKINg facILITIES

Paying by check is not a common practice in Turkey . People normally pay with cash or, increasingly, with debit or credit cards. You can obtain a credit card or an electronic debit card linked directly to your bank account as soon as you open an account. Branches of two major Turkish banks, Yapı Kredi Bank and Garanti Bank, are located on Main Campus. These branches provide both domestic and international banking services to all account holders. At these banks, you can open a foreign currency savings account as well as a Turkish Lira (TL) account. Bank personnel may help you obtain your mandatory tax number (see below) when you open a bank account. If you explain your needs to the personnel at the bank you are doing business with, they will be happy to help you with the types of transactions you require.

Obtaining a Tax Number
In order to get a tax number you need to go to the tax registration office closest to your neighborhood. Please take your passport, work and residence permits and two recent passport-size photos with you. You will also be asked to write a petition (“dilekçe” in Turkish) to explain your reason for requesting a tax number. Even though this is a required document, the officials may complete one for you if your Turkish is not very good. To accelerate the process you can prepare one in advance with the help of your department secretary or a Turkish colleague. The following tax office is the one located most conveniently for Bilkent residents:

Başkent Vergi Dairesi Müdürlüğü (Başkent Tax Registration Office)
Address: Ataturk Boulevard, #181
Bakanlıklar/Ankara
Phone: 425 7167, 425 6961
Fax: 425 7574

Turkish Currency:
Turkish banknotes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 TL.
Turkish coins come in values of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 Kr and 1 TL.
TL: Türk Lirası (Turkish lira)
Kr: Kuruş (.01 lira)

In addition to the branch offices mentioned above, there are automated teller machines belonging to a variety of banks at locations around the campus, as well as throughout Ankara and nationwide.

Note that you can use the ATMs of banks other than the one at which you have an account to withdraw cash. However, if you use an ATM of another bank, you will be charged a fee ranging from around 0.25 TL to 4 TL depending on the type of transaction and the bank.
