Can I use my original driving license in Turkey?
According to the Highway Traffic Regulations (stated in article 88), foreigners, except tourists and temporary job holders, who came to Turkey with the purpose of working, providing service or receiving education can use their original drivers license as long as they have a notarized translation of their original license with them at all times. Also, if you have an International Drivers License issued on your name in your country (International Drivers Licenses are not valid in the country they are issued), you can drive both blue plate and Turkish plate cars with that document.

How do I convert my original driving license into a Turkish one?
If you wish to get Turkish drivers license, and already have a drivers license issued in your country, all you need to do is to present the following documents listed below to the local Traffic Registration Office (Trafik Tescil Müdürlüğü) located at Ankara Emniyet Müdürlüğü (Ankara Department of Security Office)

Required Documents for converting your driving license into Turkish driving license

  1. Original drivers license and the notarized translation (your original license is returned to you immediately)
  2. Residence Permit (Original and the copy)
  3. Application forms and dossier (can be obtained from Drivers Association Office)
  4. Health Report (can be obtained from private and state hospitals, note that health insurance does not cover the expenses of this check up)
  5. Blood type (can be obtained from a health clinic)
  6. Criminal Report (This document is given by the Court House)
  7. 8 passport size photos of yourself
  8. A receipt taken from the Ministry of Finance (This particular fee is dependent on the class of license required)
  9. Drivers License Card fee

It is certainly recommended that you get your health check, and have your original license translated and notarized before you go through other proceedings, as the rest can be easily managed in one day. Also, you are advised to have a Turkish colleague or someone fluent in the language to help you with the forms and procedures at these offices.
