HEALTH CARE

Bilkent University has health centers on both Main and East Campus providing health care to all faculty, administrative staff and students. These facilities serve as polyclinics on weekdays during business hours, and as urgent care centers after working hours. Experienced physicians, nurses and five ambulances are always available for emergency cases, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They feature well-equipped in-house laboratories for immediate medical analyses, such as blood count and chemistry, urine analysis, X-rays, and ultrasound examinations. Test results are often available on the same day as your visit, while other tests are sent to reference labs.

Other available services include disease prevention plans, patience referrals, and education programs for students and staff on general medical issues and first aid.

Besides full time health care personnel, there are also specialists that you can see by appointment only. Please use the schedules shown in the chart before making an appointment. Note that, for the specialists at the Bilkent Health Centers, private health insurance pays 80% of the total charge, and you will be responsible for the remaining 20% to be paid in cash. Also note that 30% of medical costs are charged to the patient at other medical centers by the physicians who are on the approved list for the group health insurance plan. As mentioned earlier, coverage of the group health insurance plan may be subject to changes each year. Please ask Health Center personnel about the specialists' visiting and payment procedures.

Note that, at the university health centers doctors can only authorize a two-day absence report. If you have a medical problem requiring consultation and hospitalization, you can be referred to specialists in another hospital.

Medicine, both prescribed and over the counter, is sold only at the pharmacies. There are a few pharmacies (Eczane in Turkish) located very close to University Campus area, and many to be found throughout the city. Please note that pharmacies are open until 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays. However, there is always a pharmacy open 24 hours a day in each district. The name and the address of the pharmacy that is on call on a particular day is displayed on all other pharmacy windows. You can also call 11811 to find out which pharmacy is on call/duty in your area.

It is always helpful to bring your previous health records, such as doctor's notes, test results, prescribed medications, immunization records, and personal and family medical history reports in case you ever need emergency medical attention or treatment while you are here. Even though most doctors and medical caretakers can speak English, wallet size health information cards prepared in Turkish can be very practical, saving you time in case of emergency. On the card, state your blood type, allergies, chronic illnesses and infectious diseases.
