ELECTION SYSTEM FOR THE STUDENT COUNCIL

New bylaws adopted by the Interuniversity Council to govern student representation as well as the structure and organization of Student Councils in all universities in Turkey was published in the Official Gazette on September 20, 2005.

The Bilkent University Senate passed the new “Student Council Regulations” (Öğrenci Konseyi Yönergesi) to conform to the bylaws on Oct. 7, 2005. Accordingly, student elections will take place as specified by these regulations.

In this year's elections, students in each department, including those in the Preparatory School will elect one student as their department representative in each of the two- or four-year departments. In addition, students in each department of an Institute will elect its own representative.

At this stage of the elections, all registered students who are in attendance as of the close of the Add/Drop period as stated in the academic calendar will vote electronically using designated computers to elect their representatives.

The department representatives in a faculty or school will in turn elect among themselves the Faculty/School Representative. The representatives of Institutes will elect among themselves one Institute representative.

Since there are 14 Faculty/School representatives and 6 Institute representatives, a total of 20 student representatives will now form the University Student Council. The Council will then elect the Executive Committee of the Student Council, one Student Council President and a three member Board of Overseers.
