İrem Balkir

1965-2006

İrem Balkir was born in Istanbul in 1965. She received her bachelor’s degree in Western Languages and Literatures from Bogazici University in 1987 and her Ph.D in Cultural and Critical Studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 1993. She joined the Department of American Culture and Literature at Bilkent University in 1994 and served as Department Acting Chair from 1997 to 1999.




Thomas Winter

1961-2004

Thomas was born in Bremen, Germany, in 1961, and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Hamburg in 1987. He moved to the United States to pursue graduate work, receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in American history in 1994. The distinguished historian Joanne Meyerowitz supervised his dissertation. Thomas came to the Department of American Culture and Literature at Bilkent in September 1998 and served as chair of the department from 2001 to 2003. His book Making Men, Making Class: The YMCA and Workingmen, 1877-1920 was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2002. He died of cancer on 22 June 2004. He is survived by his wife Venitra and two children, Rutger and Torbjörn.
