Short Profile

Ayşe Çelikkol received her Ph.D. in English from Rice University in 2006 after earning a B.S. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University in 1998 and a B.A. in English from Beloit College in 2000. From 2005 to 2009, she worked as assistant professor of English at Macalester College.

Dr. Çelikkol’s areas of research include nineteenth-century British and American literature, liberalism, and the history of globalization. She has published articles on fiction and poetry by Walter Scott, Alfred Tennyson, and Elizabeth Stoddard. Her book, Romances of Free Trade: British Literature, Laissez-Faire, and the Global Nineteenth Century (Oxford University Press, 2011), examines romance elements in British fiction and drama that represented the emergence of a globalized free-market economy.

Çelikkol teaches in the departments of English Language and Literature (ELIT) and American Culture and Literature (AMER). In addition to surveys of fiction and poetry, she offers courses on the intersections of literature, politics, and economics. Her recent courses have focused on cosmopolitanism, transatlantic literature, and cultures of global capitalism.
