Short Profile
Muammer Şanlı received his Ph. D. in American Culture and Literature from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, in 1999. His dissertation offers a shamanistic interpretation of Walt Whitman's long poems "Song of Myself" and "The Sleepers." He taught reading, writing, speaking skills, translation, and research techniques in the First-Year English Program and the Department of English Language and Literature at Bilkent before joining the Department of American Culture and Literature. He teaches Introduction to American Culture, Texts and Contexts, Survey of American Literature, and American Poetry. His current research interests include Native-American cultures and literature, contemporary American poetry, and comparative study of American and Turkish cultures.
