This project, directed by Dr. Andrew Goldman, of the Gonzaga University History Department (Spokane), with Julian Bennett of Bilkent among his assistants, is devoted to exploring the Roman Imperial levels at Gordion. Although better known for its Phrygian remains, Gordion was possibly the statio known as Vindia or Vinda on the Antonine Itinerary, and there is evidence that the site was provided with a planned settlement early in the 1st century AD. The 2004 season revealed further evidence for this planned settlement, as well as material suggesting that Gordion may have been the location of a Late Roman military workshop, the first discovery of its kind in the Roman Empire. The 2005 season will be devoted to a better understanding of both aspects of the site, and the results will provide a major c ontribution concerning our knowledge of that is the spread and impact of Romanization in Anatolia in general, and in the province of Galatia in particular.
