Ben Claasz Coockson founded the
first archaeological illustration firm in 1985. Since then, he has been
responsible for illustration, surveying and photography at a number of sites in
the Middle East: Ilipinar, Göbekli, Kazane, Titris, Pasalar and Hacimusalar in
Turkey, and Tell Hammam, Sabi Abyad and Tell Raqqai in Syria. After several
years at the British Institute of Archaeology in Ankara, in 1997 he joined the
Bilkent Faculty, thereby combining his pedagogical training in Holland with his
archaeological career. He teaches courses in archaeological illustration and
surveying, using an on-campus replica of an excavation trench designed to
simulate field conditions. He is also responsible for the departmental slide
archive. He has written a textbook for archaeological illustrating and is
currently preparing for publication a comparative study of vernacular and
excavated architecture. He has sponsored short- and long-trekking trips for
students and faculty. For more information about his trekking, see
Findicak and
2004 Coast-to-Coast.
