Essential Information for Current Students
Attendance
The
attendance for ENG 101, ENG
102, ELS 103, ELS 104, ELS 203 and ELS 204 courses
Students are required to attend a minimum of 90% of total course hours. Attendance is counted from the first class. Students who exceed the attendance limit will automatically receive an F grade for the course.
Attendance requirements for other
FAE courses
Students are required to attend a minimum of 90% of total course hours. Attendance is counted from the first class. Students who exceed the attendance limit will automatically receive an F for the course.
Excused absence:
· Late registering students, or students adding a course during the add/drop period, must give a letter from an advisor or the department secretary to their instructor indicating the date when they registered. Once the letter is received and accepted, students will be credited for the lessons missed prior to the date of registration only. Those adding or dropping a course will not be credited for attendance on other courses, and will need to be vigilant as to attendance for the remainder of the semester.
· Students switching from one English section to another in the first week must have a signed note from their first instructor to present to their second instructor in order to be excused for those hours they missed in the second section.
·Students involved in university organized activities, such as sport or cultural activities, during lesson time, may have their attendance credited for the missed lessons, provided they produce a letter of notification from their department.
· Those absent for other reasons, including illness, should be
aware of how many blocks they have missed. If students think they
are going to have problems with attendance, they should talk to the
Head of the
VTS/FMPA (Gülnur Oğuz), as soon as possible.
Exams & In-class Assessments
· Students may submit a written petition to the Records and Archives Office ( Merkezi Evrak Müd. on Main Campus) requesting permission to make-up missed exams or assessed tasks (including in-class essay drafting, presentations, quizzes, etc). Students will need to fill in a request form (supplied in the office) along with a written petition explaining the reason for their absence, and clearly stating which assignment/exam they are requesting to make-up. The petition should be addressed to the Faculty Academic English Program. If students have a medical certificate they should attach it to their petition. Make-up exams will be arranged for those students whose petitions are approved by the university. Other reasons for absence will be considered and responded to on an individual basis.
Punctuality
Just as it is essential to come to class prepared, it is likewise important to be in the classroom on time. Your instructor will inform you of their expectations regarding punctuality.
Plagiarism
Bilkent University defines plagiarism
as: "The use of somebody else's ideas, viewpoints, findings or works in
a paper, project, report, or any similar document which is presented as
part of a course requirement, without proper acknowledgment of the
source."
For many students avoiding plagiarism is a difficult skill
to
learn. For this reason you will have the opportunity to write several
drafts of most written assignments. In your lessons and tutorials your
teacher will explain how to avoid plagiarism. If you need extra help,
you can make an appointment for an additional tutorial.
It will, however, be your responsibility to avoid plagiarism in your work. Should the final draft of your assignment still have serious problems with plagiarism, or if it is copied from another student or written by or with someone else, you may receive a failing grade for the task. Disciplinary action may also be
taken.
Please visit the Bilkent web page to learn about the Bilkent University Policy on Academic Honesty and the relevant potential disciplinary actions, as stated in the "Student Disciplinary Rules and Regulation" of the university:
Tutorial Guidelines
Tutorials are given to help you with your assignments. Please be aware of your weekly schedule so that appointments can be arranged easily. Please use tutorials to your advantage by:
· Submitting your draft in the format requested. · Checking and editing all your drafts before you hand them in. Guidance will be given to help you improve your writing, however, all errors will not be corrected for you. The drafting process is not a proof reading service! Checking and editing will make it easier for you to revise your work and save time when you are producing the final draft.
· Coming to tutorials on time.
· Reading the feedback given before the Tutorial and making any necessary corrections as well as trying to give possible solutions for any problems identified.
· Bringing any questions you have about the feedback given.
· Providing a focus for the tutorial. Make sure you understand clearly what needs to be discussed.
· Developing an action plan for what steps need to be taken after the tutorial in order to improve your work.
· Asking for additional tutorials if you are having problems.
· Keeping all drafts of your written work and the feedback given, using them to check that you have made all necessary revisions to your work.
