Bilkent University
School of English Language (BUSEL) has three main areas of activity:
providing a Preparatory Program to enable students to meet the
English language requirements for study in the different faculties
and schools of Bilkent University; providing credit bearing courses
in English for Academic Purposes to the same faculties and schools
(Faculty Academic English Program); and, offering an associate
degree in English and Translation Studies.
The BUSEL Preparatory Program
As English is the
medium of instruction at Bilkent University students are required to
have a good command of English before entering the freshman
programs. The BUSEL Preparatory Program aims to equip students with
the necessary English language and study skills for successful entry
to and study in their chosen faculties and schools. This means that
there is an emphasis on English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in the
Preparatory Program as a whole, which recognizes that students need
more than linguistic input in order to be successful in their
studies. Students are required to develop the ability to analyze
texts and information sources, as well as critical thinking skills
and awareness of their own learning styles and preferences.
The program is
intensive and demanding but a team of highly qualified teaching
staff ensures that students reach the required standards within the
shortest time possible. Many students come to the program with
little knowledge of English but at the end of a year of intensive
study are able to pass the benchmark examination (COPE).
EFL/EAP Positions for Qualified Local Language Instructors
The BUSEL
Preparatory Program invites applications from motivated and
hardworking local language instructors who have a strong sense of
responsibility and are willing to work in a professional
environment. Teaching consists of up to 20 contact hours per week
and includes language and skills development, and EAP.
Requirements
Applicants should
have an English Language Teaching or a relevant degree in the field. A relevant
post-graduate degree (e.g. MA, MSc) and/or full-time EFL/EAP
experience at the university level would be a distinct advantage.
Short-listed
applicants take the language exam and, if successful, have a job
interview, in addition to submitting a minimum KPDS score of 85 or a
TOEFL score of 250. Contractual conditions are determined after the
successful completion of the interview process. Male applicants
should have completed their military service.
Professional Development Opportunities
The school offers
professional development and advancement opportunities through
in-house internationally recognized teaching qualifications
-Cambridge ESOL
ICELT,
DELTA,
and
Master's degree in
Management in Education (in ELT)- which is available to staff
through part-time study. Further opportunities include positions of
responsibility in different units of the school for those
instructors who have the relevant qualifications and experience.
Contractual Benefits
Contract with
ICELT Course
This contract is offered to those experienced and inexperienced
instructors who will benefit from a course, which aims to improve
instructors’ skills for the context they are going to teach in. The
ICELT course is provided free of charge to staff except for an
external administration / examination fee set by Cambridge ESOL.
Instructors fulfill
the requirements of their job description and attend the
professional development sessions and/or courses offered in the
first two academic years and they teach a full course load in the
third academic year. They receive a reduction of 5 teaching
hours to attend sessions during the ICELT course.
Instructors are
required to fulfill the probationary and ICELT course requirements
at the end of each semester/academic year to have their contracts
renewed.

Contract with
BUSEL MA and DELTA
This contract is offered to those instructors who have completed the
contract with ICELT Course. The DELTA course is provided free of charge to
staff except for an external administration / examination fee set by
Cambridge ESOL. MA Management in Education (in ELT) tuition fee is
waived for BUSEL staff.
Instructors fulfill
the requirements of their job description and attend the
professional development sessions and/or courses offered. They
receive a reduction of 5 teaching hours to attend sessions during
the DELTA course.
Instructors are
required to fulfill the probationary and MA/DELTA course
requirements at the end of each semester/academic year to have their
contracts renewed. It takes five academic years to complete MA
and DELTA and other related requirements.

Experienced Instructors
Contracts for
experienced and qualified instructors are also available, however,
contractual conditions are determined after the successful

The BUSEL Faculty Academic English Program
The BUSEL Faculty
Academic English Program (FAE) provides credit bearing courses in
English for Academic Purposes from freshman year to graduate level
and aims to ensure that all students are equipped with high level
academic writing, speaking and analytical skills to contribute to
success in their main departmental courses. This is a demanding
program which ensures that students graduate with high level
academic English skills as part of their academic degree.
EFL/EAP Positions for Qualified Local Language Instructors
The BUSEL FAE
Program invites applications from motivated and hardworking local
language instructors who have a strong sense of responsibility and
are willing to work in a professionally demanding environment.
Teaching consists of up to 20 contact hours per week and is focused
on advanced EAP.
Requirements
Applicants should
ideally have an English Language Teaching or a relevant degree in
the field. However, applicants with degrees in other fields may be
considered.
A relevant
post-graduate degree (e.g. MA, MSc), and a minimum of 2 years
full-time EFL/EAP experience at the university level would be a
distinct advantage.
Short-listed
applicants take the language exam and, if successful, have a job
interview, in addition to submitting a minimum KPDS score of 85 or a
TOEFL score of 250. Male applicants should have completed their
military service.
Contractual Benefits
The school offers a
two-year renewable contract. All applicants are required to
• successfully
complete their probationary requirements by the end of the first
academic year;
• attend professional development sessions and/or courses offered
during the contractual period and meet other probationary
requirements.
Contracts are
also available for those instructors with university teaching
experience but who have not completed a relevant post-graduate
degree. Contractual conditions for these instructors are determined
after the successful completion of the interview process.
