*A note about handles and 4-mallet grips: In general,
Irecommend long birch handles for Marimba and Rattan handles forVibraphone,
Xylophone, and Bells. In general, rattan has a muchwarmer sound than birch.
However, I recommend birch for marimbabecause of the Stevens grip, which is
much more difficult withrattan. Since the marimba is naturally a 'warm' instrument,
thechoice of handles makes less difference. On vibes, it is commonto use the
Burton grip, or the traditional grip for four malletplaying. Both of these grips
facilitate the rattan mallets better,in addition to other advantages on vibes,
such as facilitatingplaying on the sharp notes in the center on close intervals,
etc.. .
