| ABOUT PHILOSOPHY IN THE AEGEAN Founded in Spring 2005,
Philosophy in the Aegean is a week long
expedition to
ancient sites in Aegean Turkey. Trips to the ruins are
augmented with
talks and
discussions of the Ancient philosophers that once called these cities
home.
More than simply a field trip, Philosophy in the Aegean fosters the
spirit of
conviviality and inspiration in the lands that gave
birth to
philosophy. The
ghosts of the minds that have captured the imagination of
civilization
itself still haunt these ruins, and we are happy to have had the
opportunity to
walk there with them.
Four faculty members and two students
will
gave
talks
on areas of interest or expertise, in addition to a symposium on
Heraclitus at the Artemis Şarap Evi, high
above
Efes in the Village of Şirince.
In Miletus,
traditionally known as the
birthplace
of Philosophy, Dr. Lucas Thorpe will take us to the roots of our
discipline
with a
discussion of Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes in the Roman Baths. The Theatre at Priene is the site of a
lecture on
the doxographical tradition of Socrates and the Seven Sages by Dr.
Geoff Bowe. Mr. Alp Rodoplu will discuss
Nietzsche's
Apollonian/Dionysian distinction in the temple of Apollo at Didyma. Mr. Burak Erbora will lead a
discussion of
Alexander's ideas on fate in the Senate of Aphrodisias. Dr. Ulrich Steinvorth will treat us to
a
discussion of ancient philosophy and politics in the Theatre at Ephesus. Dr. Sandy Berkovski will discuss the
ancient
physician Galen at the site of the famous library at Bergama, to be
followed
by a discussion of ancient medicine by Dr. Sandrine Berges. High above the ruins of Efes, in the
beautiful
Turkish village of Sirince, a
symposium on the fragments of Heraclitus will be held
with local dishes and wines. Click Here for a
