GÜLRİZ BÜKEN, Instructor

 

She received her Ph.D. degree from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey in 1974. She teaches HCIV courses at Bilkent. Prior to joining Bilkent University, Dr. Büken taught at Central Missouri State University, Hacettepe University, and Mersin University.

ANN MARIE THORNTON, Instructor

 

She has graduate degrees in History from Queen's College, Cambridge and in French Studies from the Sorbonne and the University of Exeter. Prior to joining Bilkent's Department of History, she taught at the University of Edinburgh and spent three years working in the Voltaire Foundation at the University of Oxford. Her research interests focus on the European Enlightenment, with particular reference to France and Switzerland, and she is currently working on the illustrations to the works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

BAHAR GÜRSEL, Instructor

She received her Ph.D. degree from Bilkent University in 2007 with a transnational research about social, ethnic and diplomatic history focusing on the U.S.A—Italy relations from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th. She has been an executive board member of American Studies Association of Turkey (ASAT). Her interests include American political and intellectual history, the history of Italy from Risorgimento to the end of Fascism, World War I, and immigration and ethnic history.

KERSTIN TOMENENDAL, Instructor

 

She received her Ph.D. degree  from Vienna in 2005 with the dissertation titled “The Image of the Turk in Austria-Hungary during World War I as Portrayed in War Post Cards”. She took part in the project of Prof. Andreas Tietze’s Etymological Dictionary of Turkish of Turkey.  Among her areas of research, there are Austrian-Turkish relations throughout the centuries, World War I, and Islam in Austria. Prior to joining Bilkent University, she taught at TOBB Economics and Technology University.
