Dr. F. Ömer Ilday received the B.S. degree in theoretical physics from Bogaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1998. He took his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, in 2003.

After taking his Ph.D., he worked as a postdoc in Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2003 to 2005. His studies at MIT were supported by an RLE Fellowship during the first year. In 2005, he was named a Research Scientist at MIT.  Dr. Ilday invented the similariton laser during his graduate thesis work and these lasers form the core of commercial products of at least two companies in the USA. Dr. Ilday graduated valedictorian of the Physics Department at Bogazici University. In 2004, he received the Findlay Award from the Department of Applied Physics at Cornell University. In 2006, he received the Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA-GEBIP). He currently serves as referee for Optics Letters, Journal of Optical Society of America B, Physical Review Letters, Physics Review E, IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, Optics Communications, Applied Physics B, Optics Express, as well as the European Science Foundation (ESF) and TUBITAK. He is a member of the Optical Society of America and Sigma Xi. Dr. Ilday holds four US patents. He has co-authored about 150 journal and conference papers. His contributions to the optics community include serving as a Topical Editor of Optics Letters, in addition to serving on the technical committee of numerous conferences. He is currently Assistant Professor of Physics at Bilkent University.
