Admission to the Bilkent MA TEFL Program is competitive, and the program is demanding in its academic requirements. Applicants accepted to the program are expected to maintain their personal commitments to academic and professional advancement throughout the rigorous load of courses, assignments, research, and thesis compressed into eleven months.

Who can apply?

Bilkent University's MA TEFL program is primarily geared toward the professional development needs of teachers of English, from universities throughout Turkey, who are working as, for example , research assistants (Araştirma görevlileri ), lecturers (Öğretim görevlileri), or instructors (Okutmanlar). Enrollment is also open to EFL and ESL instructors from outside of Turkey.

Admission requirements and procedures:

Candidates who are accepted to the MA TEFL program must meet at least the following criteria:

•    Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5/4.00 

•    Have had at least two years of full-time EFL/ESL teaching experience

•    Demonstrate proof of a relevant Bachelor's degree 

•    Demonstrate English language abilities that ensure success in an entirely English-medium study environment

•    Demonstrate qualifications and experiences (personal and professional) that prepare him/her to benefit from and contribute to the MA TEFL program

•    Be in a position to transfer the knowledge and experience gained in the MA TEFL program to future teaching experiences and research


ALL applicants are required to submit the following by the deadline (Applications should be completed online through

Language proficiency: One of the following official  English test scores must be submitted by students whose native language is not English: TOEFL (IBT): 87, IELTS (Academic-IDP Centre): 6.5 (at least 5.5 in each section), Bilkent Proficiency Exam C. TOEFL, IELTS  or Bilkent Proficiency Exam (PAE) scores  cannot be more than two years old. 
  2. One of the following exam results
    • ALES: Turkish applicants must submit an ALES score (verbal) of 60 or above (This test score may be submitted after the deadline).
    • Graduate Record Examination (GRE): International applicants must submit official verbal, quantitative and analytic writing scores of the Graduate Record Exam (a combined GRE Score of 950, or a combined new GRE score of 295,  and 3.5 in analytical writing)

Two letters of recommendation- for full time participants: one from the applicant's rector, dean, or department head stating that the candidate has permission to attend the 11-month program with full salary support (see: release letter), and a second from a person familiar with the applicant's academic abilities and potential: The online application system requires applicants to provide an e-mail address for each referee; a link then is sent to each referee, allowing them to submit an online reference, or upload a reference document. A referee, however, may wish to send a paper letter, which must be mailed directly to the relevant program in a sealed envelope. 
  4. Academic transcript(s), showing the receipt of a relevant Bachelor's degree (BA) (minimum CGPA: 2.5). 
  5. A statement of purpose including reasons for applying and your research inter4strs. 


All applicants who meet program requirements in the first stage of applicant screening and who submit required documents are then invited to the Bilkent University campus, in Ankara,  to complete the application process.
