Philosophers have been worried for centuries about whether or not we could build a machine that could think. When one of the world’s great chess masters is defeated by IBM’s Deep Blue, the privileged place of human mind appears less secure. Is it possible to design and build machines that can perform in all respects like a person? W hat is mind? What are the characteristics of human mind? How does it work? What is the relationship between brain and mind? What is the role of language in shaping our mind? To what extent do our experiences shape our mind? What are the roots of differences in our choices? What is consciousness? Is mind nothing more than the actions of a black box? Posing these questions, this course aims to develop a deeper understanding of the fundamental question: What is a person? |
