Mission
Statement
The overall purpose of the Özel Bilkent Lisesi curriculum is to
enable students to succeed in a world of rapid change. We aim to help
students to become self-disciplined and responsible citizens, able to use
their skills to improve their own lives, and to contribute to the society in
which they live. ÖBL encourages each student
to develop an appreciation of others and respect for cultural values.

Aims and
Beliefs
OBL is an English-medium school
in competition with the best schools in Turkey. As a result, English lessons are given a
high priority. By the end of their
English course, students are expected to be fluent speakers, writers and
readers of English.

Objectives
and Attainment Targets
Students at ÖBL should be taught reading, speaking, listening and
writing skills within an English context. Furthermore, students should be
taught how to express an opinion in appropriate spoken and written formats.
Students should be taught the skills to become independent readers. In addition to these skills, students of
the appropriate language level are prepared and recommended for the COPE Exam
(Bilkent University’s Certificate of Proficiency in
English). We also take into consideration
the future goals of our Lise 3 students, and if
there is sufficient interest from the students we offer TOEFL and Cambridge CAE exam preparation. All in all, students are encouraged to
apply what they have learned in their school environment to the wider world.

Methodology and Approaches
In creating a program designed
for today's learners, the English department capitalises
on a variety of approaches such as group work, drama, process writing for
academic and creative purposes, creative writing, oral presentation, journal
writing, debate, video, audio cassette, and games. In addition, the ÖBL
student receives individual attention in teacher-student “conferences” to
encourage the growth of their ongoing writing and project work, and so that
they also may be aware of the evolving changes of their grades.

Plagiarism
The English Department is committed to encouraging honesty
and integrity. In addition, the
Department realizes there is great pressure on the students to academically
succeed, and as such we encourage open discussion about the transgression
between teacher and student to ensure that both parties involved will
understand the nature of the act committed.
Plagiarism—the act of taking another’s ideas and
representing these as your own—is a very serious matter and will be treated
accordingly.
The procedure for dealing with cases of plagiarism as a
first time offence is as follows:
1.
The piece of work will be awarded a grade of
zero.
2.
The teacher will meet with the student to
discuss the situation and the grade of zero.
3.
The teacher will inform the head of the
department and the administration about the first time transgression.
4.
The teacher will offer the student a second
opportunity to rewrite the essay in the company of the teacher.
5.
The teacher will grade the new draft of the
essay.
