Overview of the Graduate Program

The Doctor of Philosophy Program in Political Science prepares the doctoral candidates for university-level teaching and professional research. The program is designed to provide sophisticated conceptual tools and analytical skills that will enable the candidates to contribute to the social and political science literature.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of the program is its highly inter-disciplinary nature, where the candidates are offered courses and supervision in four core areas:

• Turkish Politics
• Comparative Politics
• Political Theory
• Social Theory and Cultural Studies

The candidates in the Ph.D. program must complete 48 credit hours of coursework. Advanced Academic English, Research Methods and the -Overview- courses in the four core areas are required courses for all candidates. After completing the coursework, the candidates must pass comprehensive exams in three of the four core areas, and write and defend a dissertation that constitutes an original contribution to the social and political science literature.
