In my opipion the ITM2 course was very interesting and beneficial. The course material, especially The Multimedia: From Wagner to Virtual Reality as a book and a web site, was very well organised and stimulating for the class, in the sense that we were dealing with the recent developments of time-based media in digital environments. Because of the reason that the course is given for the first time, it turned out to be very open-minded and creative one.
The installation "Cammekan", that I contributed to was very exciting and I believe that it involved a lot of creative effort and thinking in it. I feel myself lucky for having the chance of contributing to such a project both because of the reason that I had the chance of knowing better the "precious" group members and because it played a complementary role in grasping the issues that we've covered in the class so far. "Cammekan" is an installation that can be considered as a replica of Sermon's "Telematic Vision" without the digital media. The installation was located in front of the Express Cafe, at the side of the FADA buliding. Two identical rooms were constructed and in each room a camera, a video monitor and a few black and orage cubes ( that would act as space-generating units) are placed. The theme colors that we've chosen were black and orange. We chose these colors because of the reason that we needed a dark environment and the orage would work fine with black and formed a nice contrast. The video camera in each room sent a live video image to the video-mixer, and that video mixer overlayed these images displayed the mixed image on the video monitors in both rooms. The installation starts working when the participant enters one of the rooms and sees him/herself on the monitor, next to the other person in the other room. The participant starts to interact and invade the space, the body of the other and moreover is explored and invaded by the other. As the rooms become more crowded the distinction between the two rooms begins to fade out and the participant begins to use his/her teleperesence on the monitor instead of looking the physical environment when moving in the room. Before the installation, it didn't come to my mind that this experience would produce that much uncanny feeling on the participants.
The other project of the class was Atif's and rest of the class' TreeHouse project which has a great potential in it, and worked out just so fine. The ITM2 course helped me a lot in making my mind about my thesis topic in the sense that it dealth with the new media. With ITM2, by chance, I had the opportunity of attending to the same course with one of my dearest friends from secondary school, years later. There is one thing that I am curious about, I wonder if Gizem will bring a delicious cake for our last meeting or not (no, she didn't). Last, but not least with this hyperlinked letter, I want to thank to Ozgur, Safak, Umut and Onder for their great friendship and support. Andreas, the ITM2 course was again a great idea, thank you! By the way don't forget to visit the Cammekan site. (we love orange!)
