Department of History

BIOGRAPHY
I was born in 1964 ... which seems a looooooong time ago. I grew up in Hawarden, a village in north-east Wales, UK, which is home to the remains of a motte-and-bailey, a medieval castle and a residential library. During the subsequent years, I studied and worked in various cities, including York (BA), Bangor (MA), Cambridge (PhD), Dublin (post-doc ... and while you're at it, click here!), and Oxford (research assistant). All fine places, especially the Guinness, ... er, I mean Dublin. In 1992, I married Ann-Marie and, believe it or not, she's still putting up with my bad jokes after all these years!! And, our daughter Julie Ellen Thornton was born on 21 January 2002 and our son James Edward Thornton on 15 June 2005!

TEACHING
I teach in the Department of History here at Bilkent. In addition, I am the Coordinator of our History of Civilization program. If you want to find out about my courses, please click here. It is my firm and considered opinion that History is the only genuine and noble scholarly discipline because, if practised properly, it neither serves some functional purpose nor indulges in mere sophistical speculation. Here endeth the lesson. Study history, now!

RESEARCH
My research interests are primarily concerned with the British Isles before ca 1100, especially the Celtic-speaking peoples, but also the Anglo-Saxons (check out those links for two very useful web-sites!) and Anglo-Norman England. In addition, I am interested in medieval prosopography and historical anthroponymy (mainly because they're difficult words to type and they sound clever): in this capacity, I am currently the editor of Prosopon: Newsletter of the Unit for Prosopographical Research. Lastly, I have recently started working on the prosopographical history of Bordesley abbey, a Cistercian house in Worcestershire. Though I'm sure you've got far better things to do with your time, you can click here to see a list of my 'umble publications.

INTERESTS
Now, this is more like it. OK, if you want to read some 'uplifting' literature, please click here and here ... up, up and away!! In terms of vibes, there's no doubt that Led Zep were the greatest rock band in the history of everything; but, in addition, you might want to read about Jefferson Airplane, Rush, Deep Purple, or even good ol' Slade. And, lest I be accused of only listening to old rock music, I should add I also like stuff by Reef, (though they’ve lost that web address now!) Oasis, the Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks. Anyone who knows me, also knows I'm not exactly a sporty person, but click here for some good football! I am currently learning to play the mountain dulcimer. And ... Jambo! mimi najifunza kusoma lugha ya Kiswahili. Will that do?

You can visit my other website here, but don't bother as it's currently rather boring. But please do sign my guestbook!

Lastly, I don't know who set up this web-page, but it looks good to me!!!
