Entry Requirements

Admission to the Bilkent MA TEFL Program is competitive, and the program is demanding in its academic requirements. Applicants accepted to the program are expected to maintain their personal commitments to academic and professional advancement throughout the rigorous load of courses, assignments, research, and thesis. Entry terms: Fall/Spring.

Candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission (https://w3.bilkent.edu.tr/bilkent/gradstudents/teaching-english-as-a-foreign-language):

ALL applicants are required to submit the following by the deadline (Applications should be completed online through http://stars.bilkent.edu.tr/gradapp)


  1. Proof of a relevant Bachelor’s degree, prefereably in English Language and Literature, American Language and Literature, Linguistics, Translation or equivalent. 
  2. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5/4.00 (or equivalent) 
  3. Language proficiency (for non-native speakers of English): One of the following official  English test scores must be submitted: TOEFL (IBT): 87, IELTS (Academic-IDP Centre): 6.5 (at least 5.5 in each section), Bilkent PAE Exam: C. TOEFL, IELTS  or Bilkent Proficiency Exam (PAE) scores cannot be more than two years old during registration. 
  4. One of the following exam results: 
    • ALES: Turkish applicants must submit an ALES score (verbal) of 60 or above (This test score may be submitted after the deadline but must be valid by the beginning of the term registered ).
    • Graduate Record Examination (GRE): International applicants must submit official verbal, quantitative and analytic writing scores of the Graduate Record Exam (a combined new GRE score of 295,  and 3.5 in analytical writing) 
  5. At least two letters of recommendation: The online application system requires applicants to provide an e-mail address for each referee; a link then is sent to each referee, allowing them to submit an online reference, or upload a reference document. A referee, however, may wish to send a paper letter, which must be mailed directly to the relevant program in a sealed envelope. 
  6. Academic transcript(s), showing the receipt of a relevant Bachelor's degree  (minimum CGPA: 2.5). 
  7. A statement of purpose including reasons for applying, your researach interests, and plans for your career (max. 500 words).
