Take the next step toward realizing your academic & professional aspirations!

Past & Present
Established in 1988, the Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program at Bilkent University focuses on advancing English language education, with particular strength in English-medium instruction (EMI) contexts.

The program prepares both practising and aspiring language educators through a strong theoretical foundation, systematic engagement with research, and pedagogy informed by current scholarship. Students develop the knowledge and skills needed for academic work and professional roles in ELT and related fields.

A distinctive feature of the program is its emphasis on English for academic and professional purposes. Drawing on genre theory, composition studies, and academic literacies, students examine how academic communication works in real contexts and how it can be taught and assessed effectively. Throughout the program, students engage with contemporary research and translate it into principled classroom practice.

Our mission is to develop critically informed ELT professionals and scholars who can succeed in diverse academic and professional environments. In a learning community grounded in academic rigor and critical inquiry, students grow as reflective practitioners and capable researchers, ready to contribute to English for General Academic Purposes and English for Specific Academic Purposes in local and international settings.

Over the past three decades, the program has welcomed participants from across Türkiye and beyond and built a strong community of educator-scholars. Many alumni now serve as researchers, teacher educators, and academic leaders within Türkiye’s English language education landscape.

The program remains committed to advancing knowledge and pedagogy across educational levels. We invite you to explore the opportunities offered by the Bilkent MA TEFL program and take the next step in your academic and professional development.
