Tijen Akşit

Dr. Tijen Akşit holds a PhD in Educational Sciences, as well as an MA and a BSc in English Language Teaching. She has been affiliated with Bilkent University for more than thirty years.

She began her career as an English language instructor in the English Language Preparatory Program at Bilkent University’s School of English Language, where she worked for six years. She later served as a full-time teacher and, for one year, as Director of Language Studies at a K-12 school, Kolej Ayşeabla, in Ankara before undertaking various administrative roles at Bilkent University.

Over the years, Dr. Akşit has taught general English, English for Academic Purposes, and English for Specific Purposes at the tertiary level. Since 2011, she has also taught pre-service and in-service teacher education courses at Bilkent University’s Graduate School of Education. In June 2024, she moved to the Faculty of Education on a full-time basis, where she has been teaching graduate courses in the MA in TEFL program.

Dr. Akşit has played a major role in the development of quality assurance systems for tertiary-level English language preparatory programs in Turkish universities, working closely with the Higher Education Quality Council of Türkiye. She is also an Advisory Board Member of the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Language Education.

She is the author of
Characteristics of Effective Schools and co-editor of Bridging Teaching, Learning and Assessment in the English Language Classroom and The Future of Teaching English for Academic Purposes. In addition, she has published on teacher appraisal systems, teacher action research, English for Academic Purposes, and English-medium instruction.

Her research interests include English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English-medium instruction (EMI), language teacher development, quality assurance in language education, teacher leadership, and the teaching of English and Turkish as foreign languages.
