Course Overwiew


Introduction to visual techniques is an introductory course on photography techniques (Murad Gürzumar GRA 225) and electronic imaging techniques (Fulya Ince GRA 226).

Students are expected to acquire basic technical knowledge of black and white photography including film developing, enlarging and paper processing in synchronization with the fundamental video production basics.

Also within the same course, students are introduced to computers and graphic design software.

Course Objectives

1. To learn the historical evolution of cameras and photography techniques

2. To learn how and why to use the basic functions of a camera

3. To learn how to use light sources

4. To learn basic photographic materials and equipment

5. To learn basic darkroom procedures and working methods

6. To develop visual sensitivity and analytical / critical skills

Week 1 Principles of light, Camera Obscura
Week 2 The simple camera: Pinhole Camera - Types of camera
Week 3 Basic Controls of a Camera, Shutter, Aperture, Focusing
Week 4 Introduction to Darkroom
Week 5 Depth of Field, Blur and Movement
Week 6 Lenses and their Controls, extra lenses and other photographic equipment
Week 7 Films and their types
Week 8 Exposure and measuring exposure
Week 9 Pattern, Texture and Shape in Photography
Week 10 Subject Lighting, Artificial Light Sources
Week 11 Color - Subtractive and Additive Color Synthesis
Color Temperature, CC Filters and other filters
Week 12 Using the tonal range: high and low key effects
Week 13 Organizing the picture


Course Requirements

35mm Reflex Camera, Standard and Tele / Zoom Lens

6x7cm Medium Format Camera, Standard and Wide Lens
(school's equipment to be used in the studio #210)

Flash system with the relevant parts
(school's equipment to be used in the studio #210)

Exposure Meter
(school's equipment to be used in the studio #210)

100 sheet of 18x24cm Ilford multigrade paper: glossy or semi-matt surface
10 sheet of 3Ox4Ocm Ilford multigrade paper: glossy or semi-niatt surface

1 roll of 36 exp. medium speed slide film
(to be developed by a professional lab)

10 roll of 36 exp. medium speed B&W Negative film
(to be developed by student)

One roll 120 (1O exp.) medium speed B&W Negative film
(to be developed by student)

Students are required to submit a portfolio containing their projects 8 rolls of 36 exp. medium speed B&W negative film.
