The History of Civilization, or HCIV, program at Bilkent traces the development of human society and culture from the earliest civilizations in the Near East until modern times. Special emphasis is given to reading and analysing original texts from the past and understanding them within their historical contexts.

The course is made up of two parts: HCIV101 (Fall semester) and HCIV102 (Spring semester):

HCIV101 provides background to the development of ancient and medieval civilizations: it deals with the nature and spread of the earliest civilizations in the ancient Near East and the development of civilization in classical and medieval Europe.

HCIV102 continues the story and provides background to the development of modern Western civilization: it deals with the history of European society from around AD 1500 until the present day.
