Project 11: Still Life

Project Requirements:

You may use either 35mm camera or 6x7 medium camera with at least a standard lens (can be a telelens), and a tripod. Use one roll of a Medium speed (FP-4 Ilford) B&W Negative film. Make at least 2 good 18x24cm, 20x30cm 30x40cm prints on a multi-grade paper and do not forget to make one sheet of contacts.

1. Set up a simple still life indoors or outdoors. Indoors, either in studio FB-210 or at your home. Outdoors on the floor, the ground, or a table. Use any subject that you want. It can be a vase of flowers or bowl of fruit or any similar grouping of small objects. Shoot this still-life in 45º front light. Outdoors, this can be sunlight. Indoors, you can use flashlight with a softbox or continuous light (tungsten). Use a reflector board if needed in the shadow area.

2. Set up an advertisement still-life in studio FB-210. Look through consumer magazines and select an advertisement containing a product photograph that appeals you. It should contain items and/or products that are easy for you to obtain. Try to make an exact duplicate of the photograph in the ad (advertisement). Do not simplify photograph the picture in the ad. Duplicate the set up and shoot it as best you can. Submit your photo without any of the words or type that are in the ad. Also, enclose the page from the magazine (or a Xerox copy) to compare your photo with the original.

HINT: A common mistake is to place the still-life so close to the background wall that harsh
shadow is seen outlining it. Rather position your subject far enough from the background
to eliminate the wall shadow or soften it bye a reflecting board.
